summer stay cool tips…the eco way
Now that summer has finally arrived, staying cool is a top priority. Here is a short list of ways to keep you and your home nice and cool during the hot summer months.
- Hang dry your sheets in front of an open window or door. This is a great way to save energy by not using your dryer, and you will get a nice misty breeze from the sheets.
- Don’t cook in the summer…well we mean don’t use your oven if you don’t have to. Prepare meals using your stove or oven as little as possible. This will help to keep the temperature down in your home. You will also feel more refreshed eating a cold meal.
- Make homemade popsicles with your kids. Homemade popsicles are a great way to give your kids a healthy treat with substantially less sugar and additives than a traditional store bought popsicle. Use your favourite local organic fruit juice, or blend up some fresh local strawberries with organic yogurt and freeze for 3-4 hours. The best eco alternative to traditional plastic popsicle moulds are silicone popsicle moulds. Neither is ideal, but both are still much more eco friendly than purchasing store bought popsicles.
- Using your washing machine, dryer and dishwasher cause the temperature in your home to go up. Try using these appliances less in the summer. You can do this by waiting to run your dishwasher until it’s completely full, combining loads of laundry and hang drying your clothes. You’ll save a bunch of energy and keep the temperature in your home from going through the roof.
