resource centre kiosk – the story

Sustainability is becoming more pervasive, as people and businesses alike are finding ways to reduce their environmental impact.

But despite this growing environmental awareness, Park Royal Shopping Centre recently found that finding a company that builds sustainable kiosks is still a bit of a challenge.

As part of our Sustainability in Action initiative, we wanted to create an information kiosk for Park Royal shoppers, tenants and staff to learn more about and be inspired by what we’re doing to create a greener, healthier shopping and work environment, and to lessen our impact on the environment.

Park Royal asked our sustainability consultancy, Junxion Strategy, to devise, design and build a resource centre to communicate to shoppers and tenants the value of our green activities, with the condition that this kiosk supported and reflected our sustainability commitment.

While attending the recent GLOBE 2008 conference on business and the environment, Junxion discovered a trade show company that fit the bill. VMC Group was showcasing some of their new sustainable booth materials and practices at GLOBE, which caught the attention of the Junxion team.

Together with Junxion, VMC developed a kiosk concept and design that includes both recycled and renewable materials, and uses lower-energy lighting and displays.

For example, the Sustainability in Action kiosk is build with 65 percent recycled aluminum framing. Displays are fitted with bamboo plywood underlays, while the flooring – provided by Home Depot – is made from renewable bamboo, which is stained using a steam process that heats and draws out the material’s natural sugars, creating a rich coffee-colour. Glass theft-prevention panels are fitted using friction, not glue, while the wall displays are made from recycled yarn and their graphics are printed using non-solvent inks. The kiosk also features an energy-efficient LCD screen for graphics and video. The banners hanging from the centre courtyard ceiling were also produced locally by Multigraphics, and use “Bioflex” material, a biodegradable substance that breaks down within 30 days when put in a landfill.

VMC and Junxion also ensured the transportation of the display was as green as possible, with the unit arriving at the Shopping Centre via a shared truck line, rather than a dedicated shipment.

Park Royal is certain the kiosk will not only provide insightful and inspiring information to our shoppers and tenants, but that it will be a true example of Sustainability in Action.
