Sustainability is always a tricky concept when it comes to fashion. Fashion trends are ever changing and therefore contradict the core concept of sustainability in many ways, thus making it slightly challenging to provide you, the reader with new information. It's also very important to me when writing these articles to ensure that what I am sharing is both accurate and truly sustainable. In my past articles on eco-fashion I have focused on giving tips on what eco-fashion is, what to look for and how to source it (to read these articles check out the archive section of our website). In the following article I am going to share with you some information on the newest wave of truly sustainable fashion.
More commonly referred to as refashioning, using worn clothes to create new designer looks is one of the biggest trends in eco-fashion. Although a new trend to the mainstream fashion market, eco-minded fashionistas have been refashioning clothing for years.
So how can you refashion your wardrobe? Well the most obvious way is to do it yourself. Go through your wardrobe and take out anything you haven't worn in a year. From here you can create headbands from t-shirt sleeves, purses from pants and much more. You can be as creative as you want to be depending on your skill level with a sewing machine and a pair of scissors.
If you're not feeling that adventurous try creating a new look that doesn't take any cutting or sewing. Take one of your husband or boyfriends dress shirts that he doesn't wear anymore and a chunky belt and pair it with your favourite pair of jeans and pumps. Or, take an old scarf or tie and use it as a belt. You can also go totally old school and cut up your old jeans to make capris or cut-offs for the warmer weather months.
