Tips to reduce, reuse, and recycle in the home office

If you have a home office, there are many ways you can reduce its carbon footprint:

  • Pay your bills online. Not only will you be helping to save trees - you'll also help reduce the transportation stream required to deliver the bills and the paper they're printed on, which could contribute to a reduction in fuel consumption.
  • Where possible, send documents via email or electronic fax. And when you do have to print, use both sides of the page.
  • Recycle your photocopier and laser printer cartridges. Future Shop accepts used cartridges, and many cartridge manufacturers have postage-paid return programs. Check their websites for details.
  • Switch to rechargeable batteries, and take your old ones to a recycling drop-off station.
  • To reduce lighting consumption, use task lighting instead of general room lighting.
  • When purchasing a new monitor, opt for an energy-saving LCD. An added benefit: LCD models are space-savers, too.
  • When the time comes to say goodbye to your obsolete computer, check this website for Park Royal's e-trash recycling dates. For most other electronic items, including MP3 players, used batteries, cell phones, CD players, CD’s and more, you'll find information at http://www.futureshop.ca/marketing/recycle/ .
