Get A Good Night's Sleep

Nothing rejuvenates the soul like a restful night. Here are some ways to maximize your chances of getting a good night's sleep:

  • Don't consume caffeine and alcohol near bedtime. Although alcohol may initially act as a sedative, it will likely interfere with your normal sleep patterns.
  • Do not nap during the day, as it may throw off your body clock and make it even more difficult to sleep at night.
  • Keep the thermostat low in your bedroom. The cooler temperature will prevent you from waking up with a "stuffy" head.
  • Turn an illuminated clock face away from you. If you're having trouble sleeping, clock-watching will increase your anxiety, and the brightness of the light can act as a stimulant.
  • Relax for a while before going to bed. Take a warm bath or read a book. Your mind requires time to slow down, and if you've been engaged in a stressful or stimulating mental activity, it will take longer for you to relax and get to sleep.
  • Keep a regular schedule and routine. Going to bed at the same time each night and waking at the same time each morning will help set your internal clock. You can also help regulate your body’s natural biological clock by exposing yourself to bright light when you awaken, and by keeping your bedroom dark when you sleep.
